Praised by the Albuquerque Journal for his “charismatic voice — a warm, rich tone, which soars with ease from a high top to lush lows,” British/Irish-born baritone Edmund Connolly is a versatile musician based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Before moving to the US, Connolly was based in London, where he appeared in over 25 roles across multiple languages as an opera soloist and chorus member with leading companies, including English Touring Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. As an oratorio soloist, he performed under renowned conductors such as Sir David Willcocks (Fauré’s Requiem) and Sir Stephen Cleobury (Handel’s Saul and Mozart’s Coronation Mass in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge).
Edmund Connolly has also recorded extensively as both professional choral singer and soloist, including several recordings produced by Sir John Rutter. A regular performer with the BBC Singers, he has recorded and performed in the UK and in Europe with distinguished ensembles including the Dmitri Ensemble, the Gabrieli Consort, and English Voices under conductors including Bob Chilcott, David Hill, Paul McCreesh, Donald Runnicles, and Sir John Rutter.
Since relocating to New Mexico, Connolly has appeared as a soloist with the New Mexico Philharmonic (Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem in Albuquerque’s Popejoy Hall, Bach’s St. John Passion at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John), the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus (Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria), and Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico (Handel’s Messiah). He has also performed several programs with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale under Artistic Director Joshua Habermann.
Together with his wife, pianist and organist Maxine Thévenot, Edmund forms the duo Air & Hammers, whose debut recording, Desire in Spring, was released on the Raven CD label and described as a “winsome survey of songs” by American Record Guide. A published composer, his works include organ selections featured by Encore Publications (Born in a Stable).
Born in London and raised in Oxford, Edmund Connolly studied music at Robinson College, Cambridge University, where he held an organ scholarship. He went on to earn a master’s degree in vocal performance from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he subsequently taught for seven years before moving to the US.
