Recording Services

I have been recording since I was a child - ever since I first got my hands on a cassette recorder. Its built-in mic might not have been up to much, but it was the start of a fascination that continues to this day. As an undergraduate, I bought a Sony stereo microphone and a MiniDisc recorder, which I used to record services and concerts. I would burn these recordings to CD to share with the people involved - I still love that recordings connect people to their performances in a different way

Through this experience, I started to understand the challenges of capturing music in a way that translated to a satisfying listening experience, and I realized I had a great deal to learn - it's harder than it looks! In the twenty or so years since, my work as a professional performer has put me in front of countless microphones, many placed there by expert engineers from the BBC, Naxos, and others. While my role was usually to make sound into these microphones, my curiosity remained - I always wanted to learn more.

In the past ten years or so, I have been putting my knowledge into practice and continuing to learn, becoming more experienced in recording choirs, orchestras, chamber groups, solo voices, and the pipe organ. Gone are the days of the portable MiniDisc recorder - I now use professional equipment, including high-quality microphones and a high-resolution field recorder, for my audio recording work.

In recent years, video has become more and more important to performers and ensembles. With considerable experience in video editing and production, I can help with your video needs too. Get in touch!

Building your archive

High-quality concert recordings allow you to build an audio archive of your performances. This doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated, but when you have your hands full with organizing and preparing for a concert, it can feel overwhelming to add just one more thing.

Sure, you could record it yourself. Some people do - it's just a matter of putting up a couple of microphones and hitting record, right? Well, yes and no. If those microphones are well-chosen, used in an appropriate stereo array, and placed properly and at an optimal height, then we're getting somewhere. But to know how to do that requires experience, and that isn't something you can buy for yourself.

Contact me about recording your next concert - with over a decade of experience in live concert recording, I have the knowledge, skills, and equipment to make high-quality recordings of your performances to help you build your archive.

Audition recordings

Video auditions are rapidly becoming standard for colleges, scholarships, summer courses, and more. With so many candidates submitting videos, it makes sense to prioritize audio and video quality to help you present your best work to the world. I can take care of the audio and video recording, so you can concentrate on giving your best performance. I can also offer professional piano accompaniment services should you need them.

Recording Samples

The Chaski Quartet gave a wonderful concert at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John, Albuquerque, on June 16, 2024. The videos, shared with their permission, include some footage from the cathedral's livestream cameras, which I used for additional angles.
